Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy went on an 8-0 run to open the game and outlasted an American comeback attempt, as the Eagles fell to the Midshipmen 13-12 in Patriot League lacrosse action on Tuesday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Amanda Makoid opened up scoring for AU in the second half, scoring her seventh of the season to make it 9-3. The Eagles controlled the draw and Jackie Lane scored on a free position shot at 27:51 to make it 9-4. Rawlick scored her third of the game for Navy and Sarah Bushong tallied her first of the contest to make it 11-4 with 24:40 remaining.

The Eagles would score the next three goals of the game, with Ferguson, Lauren Aksionoff and Kira Sonberg scoring.

American won their 11th draw of the game and patiently waited on offense as Brittany Finnegan found room and scored to make it 11-8. Aksionoff hit the post on a free position shot and Navy took control of the ball, but Finnegan caused a turnover at the half that resulted in Person's second goal of the contest, and just like that, it was a two goal game with over 16 minutes left.

Navy thwarted the AU momentum when Rawlick and Decker scored their fourth goals of the game, putting the Mids up, 13-9. The Eagles refused to give in, as Fischer came right back down the field and scored and Lisa Schaaf followed with a tally soon after to make it 13-11 with 8:07 remaining. Navy held the ball in the American zone for the majority of the time remaining but were unable to add insurance. Aksionoff scored on a free position with 56 seconds left to make it 13-12, but for the second straight game the Eagles fell short of the comeback.

Navy's Meg Decker got the first Midshipmen goal at 27:27 to kick off an 8-0 run to start the game. Katrina Nietsch scored a tally assisted by Amanda Towey and Navy took a 3-0 lead at 18:45 on an unassisted tally from Erin Rawlick. Mary Ruttum made it 4-0 less than a minute later on a pass from Towey and would extend the Mids lead to five on an unassisted Decker goal with 17:32 remaining in the half.

Up 6-0 after Decker's third goal of the game off a free position shot, the Eagles controlled the draw but were unable to get off a good shot, giving Navy the ball. Vida made a save on Rawlick and AU went back on the offense but the Eagles were unable to get off a good shot.

Nietsch scored on a free postion followed by another Towey score put the Mids up 8-0 with just over nine minutes left in the first.

AU controlled the ensuing draw and Leslie Fischer drew a foul and cashed in on the free position to put the Eagles on the board at the 8:57 mark. Brit Ferguson won the draw control for American and took the ball the distance to give the Eagles another score less than 30 seconds later to put the score at 8-2

Frankie Solomon made her first save in relief of Kristine Vida at the 7:51 mark, stopping Decker's point blank attempt. A pair of crease violation negated Navy's next two offensive attempts but the Eagles could not get much offense going. Navy got one more tally from Rawlick and entered the second half up 9-2.

American (5-7, 3-1 PL) outscored Navy 10-4 in the second half. Fischer, Askionoff, Ferguson each scored two goals for the Eagles, while Makoid, Finnegan, Sonberg, Schaaf, J. Lane and Person scored one.

Navy (8-2, 2-1 PL) was led by Rawlick and Decker's four goals.

American will next play at Virginia Tech in non-conference action on Saturday at 1 p.m.
