American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO
June 2, 2008

Junior Carlos Jamieson has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics and Recreation officials announced Monday.

On Friday Jamieson became the first male runner in program history to qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the 5000 meter run when he placed fourth at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Jamieson completed the course in 14:09.56, just shy of his personal best set earlier this year.

Jamieson had only competed in the 5000 meter run once this season before the regional meet. On March 28 Jamieson took ninth in the 5000 at the Adidas Raleigh Relays, posting a time of 14:08.54 which set a new personal best and is the second-fastest time in school history.

Jamieson will now compete at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, hosted this year by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The championships will begin on Wednesday, June 11 and will conclude on Saturday, June 14. The men's 5000 meter run is tentatively scheduled to begin on Friday, June 13 at 9:15 p.m.
